The entire process (from 12:30 am to 8:04 pm) was quite an amazing experience.

Grace's water broke at 12:30 am and we checked in to the hospital at 2:00 am. She made excellent progress until around 8 am. I was (and am) so proud of her. She even got to the point with her breathing that she could walk through a contraction. What a trooper!

However, after that we hit a wall and couldn't make enough progress to enter into the pushing stage because baby was facing upwards instead of downwards. At this point I started to lose it. Not only was I physically exhausted from being up all night, but it is emotionally exhausting seeing your wife endure such pain. In addition, stalling out at that point and not being able to make progress really discouraged me.

During the afternoon, the doctor started to suggest alternate plans. We took one of the options and while that seemed to help take the edge off the pain of the contractions, we still weren't making enough progress to push.

At that point, the doctor basically gave an ultimatum: if by 6 pm we were still at the same stage, we'd be heading to the operating room. And, while not necessarily a bad thing, operations are a serious thing and, if possible, we'd like to avoid that.

Many many people were praying for us, and we really appreciate it. Miraculously, at 6:15 pm when the doctor checked Grace, she was ready to enter the next stage. I couldn't believe it.

So Grace pesevered another two hours in the exhausting task of pushing. I don't know how she did it, but all of a sudden they are telling her not to push because the doctor isn't ready yet.

They brought in all this stuff including bright lights so the the doctor can see; the doctor got into position, and Grace gave a few more powerful pushes and, amazingly enough, Micah was born.

    I couldn't believe it.

Not only could I not believe that there was this new person staring at us, but I couldn't believe that he'd come out without an operation.

My first thought was, "He's pretty good lookin' for a newborn." I know I am grossly biased, but I do think he has nice features and skin.

There was a point yesterday when I thought this would never end, nor would it ever end well. God is merciful and I am thankful.
